Lynne
Streeter's life size bronze sculpture of Bacchus was commissioned by
a private art collector. The sculpture was created as a limited edition
of six copies, plus two artist proofs, at the Fonderia
Artistica Versiliese in Pietrasanta, Italy. Currently only the first
of the series has been completed. "Bacchus" stands on the
back of a turtle who carries the map of the world on her shell. The
full height of the sculpture is seven feet and one inch (7'1"),
or two meters and sixteen centimeters (2.16m).
The artist,
Lynne Streeter, finished the original full-scale figure and turtle in
clay and mixed media in August of 2002. The rubber molds of the sculpture
were completed in September of 2002. Waxes were then prepared and cast
into bronze from October 2002 to January 2003. The placing of Bacchus
onto the back of the turtle and all the final details, including welding,
grinding, finishing, and the vibrant patina colors, were completed during
January and February of 2003.
After
its completion, "Bacchus" was on public display in the cloisters
of Sant' Agostino in Pietrasanta from February 14 to 26, 2003. He returned
there again for the occasion of the Premio Versilia Italian Sommeliers
Association from March 29 to 31, 2003 and while there he appeared on
Italian television station RAI 1. After the sculpture's second public
appearance, "Bacchus" was shipped to his final destination
inside a private home in Fort Worth, Texas.
Lynne
Streeter has been a resident of Pietrasanta since 1981. Eighteen years
ago she founded a school of marble sculpture that takes place in Pietrasanta
each summer. She spends part of each year in Pietrasanta and the other
part in her studio in Oakland, California.
